Description: | The world’s biggest trucks won’t be found in a showroom. They do, however, share one trait in common: they were designed and built for mining, although you can sometimes find them outside this “habitat.” They’re huge in nearly every respect. First, and most obviously, their sheer size sets them apart. They’re typically up to fifty feet long, as much as 25 feet high, and have operating weights from 300 to 600 tons. Second, their capacity is likewise staggering, ranging from 240 to 400 tons. Finally, as you’d expect from this size of trucks, the engines are also huge. No V-8’s here; the smallest engine in the class is a 16 cylinder, and 20 and 24 cylinder models are actually more common. For all their size, these trucks are surprisingly sprightly, many of them topping out at 40 miles per hour (though with rather large turn radii; they’re not the most agile thing going). |
