Description:	The bowtie originated among Croatian mercenaries throughout the Prussian wars of the 17th century: the Croat mercenaries employed a scarf around the neck to keep together the opening of these shirts. It is uncertain if the cravat subsequently evolved into the bowtie and neck-tie, or whether the cravat gave rise to the bowtie, which in turn resulted in the necktie.
